Booster Seat

Our kids need to sit in their safety seat and in the passenger seat until they are old enough to wear the seatbelt properly or typically not until they are 13 years old. Even so the kid’s body is growing differently so the time they exceed and remain in the safety seat may vary as well to their same age friends or family. As a parent, we have to pay attention to the type of safety seat and their weight or height limit in order to provide the best protection.

If you are here then it means the kid is already growing exceeding the weight and height limit of their front facing or convertible car seat which means now they are ready to move into the booster seat. This seat is preparing them for the seatbelt later when they are already old enough so as the name suggests it is used to boost the height and to help the seatbelt to properly fit into their body, using the seat’s form factor and belt positioner.

There are two types or booster seats available depending on which seems to fit your kids the most. The first is a high back booster such as Britax Midpoint Vs Highpoint. This type of booster seat usually has an adjustable neck or headrest to cover the kid’s body from both sides too. Below the headrest there is a small slot meant to align the car’s seat belt before being wrapped across the passenger’s body and clipped. In some models there is a middle seat slot too for helping the proper positioning.

This type of booster usually will give the best fitting or positioning especially on the shoulder area because there is a dedicated slot here. Additionally, if your passenger seat has no head rest, the seat can provide some support using its own neck and head rest. For those parents whose kids often sleep in the car, since the seat has shoulder support too, they will be able to sleep comfortably and safely.

The second type of booster seat is a backless type which is similar to the high back booster but has no back support at all. It is only a cushion in a sense and used to increase the height of the passenger to improve the seat belt positioning. It is often preferred by older kids because they don’t need the shoulder positioner anymore or to look less like a kid. It is also cheaper to buy and simpler, making it easy to fit and stored in the car.

About Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit

Just like with other safety seats, we have to make sure that the seat we buy for them is suitable for their weight and height since this is what’s important in order to make sure the car’s seat belt is working properly. The safety seat for younger passengers may have additional protection against impact but this type of feature is getting less common as the kids are growing up. If yours is already growing exceeding the weight and height limit of the previous seat, a booster is what you will need next.

There are lots of options to choose from, based on the various car seat manufacturers out there. Many of them are making baby gear too so if you have stroller or infant car seats, chances are they are also making safety car seats too, such as Britax and Chicco. These brands are quite famous and often being the choice of many for their huge range of collection and good product qualities. Depending on the models however, in most cases booster seats will be the easiest to install.

Some favorite models from these brands are Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit that are very similar to each other. These favorite booster seats are loved for their easy to use and good overall quality such as the sturdy built and comfortable material. We have talked about Midpoint in the previous article and this seat is like the lower version of Highpoint but is still a good car seat. It is currently discontinued in 2019 but you may be able to find it at some retailers.

What we love the most from Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit is their ease of use because installing them is no brainer or if your kids never forget to buckle up their seatbelt again after getting out of the car we don’t really need to have it attached for it is already secured by the car’s seat belt. In comparison however, the latter is carrying more capabilities as it is offering two booster modes in one seat which is why it is called as 2-in-1.

Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit Design

Just like with many other booster seats, these two are very similar to each other in terms of shape and overall design. However, their details are different because the shape of their shoulder and head or neck rest are very different. In measurement, they are almost identical but the widest part of these seats or their shoulder flares are different with Midpoint at 20 inch compared to KidFit at 19 inch. The seat form factor also allows for Midpoint to carry higher weight at 120 pounds compared to 110 pounds.

Another prominent difference is the new material used in Midpoint which you can see on the sample picture above. This seat has dual material type in which the middle or the grey part is designed to keep the kid’s always cool while the black cover is very airy to help improve its breathability. In terms of the seat comfort, they are equally padded and have a pan depth of 14 inches so we do think the kid will sit comfortably in their booster.

Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit Installation

Now for the most important part, let’s see what Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit can offer starting from the installation because car seats need to be installed and it is safer to attach them into something to prevent it from moving even when there is no passenger sitting on them. But, booster seats are easier to install in general because you just need to attach the low anchor on the car’s seat to keep it safe and when in use, the seat along with the passenger will be secured with a seatbelt.

Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit Fitting

Next we want to talk about the fitting of these seats which will be very similar as well. What we want to mention is they have a different height for the belt positioner which means the height limit for our kids can vary as well. Starting with Midpoint, the highest belt guide position is 22.5 inches following the neck and head rest adjustment. This way, the kid can be as tall as 63 inches to be properly fitted in the seat.

On the other hand, KidFit is slightly lower with its highest belt guide position at around 19.5 inches which makes the tallest height range up to 57 inches. The age range will probably not be the same depending on how fast the kid is growing up so it is best to follow the weight or height limit from these seats.

Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit Features

Lastly we want to talk about the additional features of Britax Midpoint and Chicco KidFit which in this part we will see that KidFit is a 2-in-1 booster meaning this seat is capable of being used in two modes; the highback and the backless seat. The backless booster is what to use when the kid is growing exceeding the height limit of the seat because this way the seat will be less restrictive, including if their body is on the bigger side.

In addition, Midpoint has a positioning belt clip on the middle of the seat to help improve the fit especially for younger or smaller passengers. If you need to reduce the seat’s width, the cup holder in this model is also removable to be stored away or for cleaning. For the maintenance, their fabric can be removed and washed manually.

Britax Midpoint vs Chicco Kidfit

Both seats are good options based on how easy it is to install the two and how they are very comfortable for the passenger. What’s different is Britax Midpoint has a higher belt positioner height and is able to secure taller as well as heavier passengers. However, this seat is a high back booster only which means we can’t remove the back to convert the seat into a backless booster which you can do with the KidFit.
