Overview
Before we proceed, let’s first take a look at the different variants of Diono Radian. There are now three different models, which are Diono Radian 3R, Diono Radian 3RX, and Diono Radian 3RXT. These are new, updated models. They were previously known as Diono Radian R100, Diono Radian R120, and Diono Radian RXT, respectively. See also: Diono Radian vs Rainier.

In this article, we will focus our discussion on Diono Radian 3R  and Diono Radian RXT. This is because Diono Radian 3R is the cheapest model in the line, whereas Diono Radian RXT is the most expensive. People often wonder if they should spend more money or not, as the two models seem to be quite similar to each other.

Both Diono Radian vs Radian RXT are slim enough to allow you to fit three units across the backseat. Both models are three-in-one convertible car seats that can serve rear-facing, forward-facing, and as high-back booster seats. In addition, both models are foldable and FAA-certified. Still, there are some differences in their features and specifications.

Size and Weight
In terms of size and weight, these two models are quite close to each other. Neither is really larger than the other. The weight difference is pretty much negligible.

Diono Radian 3R measures 16.14 inches x 16.93 inches x 28.35 inches. It weighs about 28.53 pounds. Thanks to the slim design, this car seat will allow you to fit three units across the backseat in most vehicles. However, since the backrest is quite tall, you will need an angle adapter in order to use the car seat rear-facing.

Diono Radian RXT also measures 16.14 inches x 16.93 inches x 28.35 inches. It happens to be a little bit lighter at 28.14 pounds, but it is still a heavy car seat. This model will also allow you to fit three units across the backseat in most vehicles.

These car seats are heavy because they have very durable steel alloy frames to provide the best safety for your child. Both Diono Radian vs Radian RXT are foldable. You can fold their seats flat to allow easy carrying. Although the heavy mass makes them not very practical to bring along when traveling, it is still possible to use them on airplane seats. Both are FAA-certified for airplane use in the harness mode. They fit well on most airplane seats.

Suitable Uses
As mentioned above, both Diono Radian 3R and Diono Radian RXT can serve as rear-facing harnessed car seats, forward-facing harnessed car seats, and high-back booster seats. However, their weight and height limits differ.

Diono Radian 3R generally has lower weight and height limits:
– The rear-facing harnessed mode is suitable for a child between 5 – 40 lbs. The maximum child height is 44 inches.
– The forward-facing harnessed mode is suitable for a child between 20 – 65 lbs. The maximum child height is 57 inches.
– The high-back harnessed mode is suitable for a child between 50 – 100 lbs. The maximum child height is also 57 inches.

Although Diono Radian 3R can be used for a baby as small as 5 lbs, it is not recommended for such purpose. This is because it does not have an infant support cushion. If you really need to use it for a small baby, make sure to recline the seat and provide a snug fit by using some towels.

The maximum child weight that Diono Radian 3R can accommodate is only 100 lbs, so it can only work for a child of up to 12 – 13 years old. If you need to use a booster seat for a larger kid, you need to get Diono Radian RXT instead.

Diono Radian RXT offers higher weight and height limits:
– The rear-facing harnessed mode is suitable for a child between 5 – 45 lbs. The maximum child height is 44 inches.
– The forward-facing harnessed mode is suitable for a child between 20 – 65 lbs. The maximum child height is 57 inches.
– The high-back booster mode is suitable for a child between 50 – 120 lbs. The maximum child height is 57 inches.

Unlike Diono Radian 3R, Diono Radian RXT is suitable for newborns and small babies. It has an infant support cushion which you can use to ensure a snug, secure fit. The seat can be reclined to provide a suitable position until the child can sit upright, though you may need an angle adjuster so that the reclined seat can fit inside your vehicle.

Another advantage of Diono Radian RXT is that it can be used for bigger kids. With a maximum weight limit of 120 lbs in the booster mode, this unit can be used for a child of up to 13 – 14 years old. So, this is a recommended choice if you need a convertible booster seat for an older kid.

Installation
Both Diono Radian vs Radian RXT comes with the company’s SuperLATCH installation system. It works with the vehicle’s latch anchors. However, this means that the proprietary installation system can’t be used on older vehicles that don’t have latch anchors.

Nevertheless, the SuperLATCH installation system is quite easy and practical to use. The connectors make a clicking sound when they are properly attached, so you can know for sure whether the installation has been secured or not. Both models have a rubberized bottom surface, so the car seat won’t wiggle or move around from its place. Don’t forget to attach the top tether when installing in a forward-facing position.

Both Diono Radian 3R and Diono Radian RXT can also be installed using the vehicle’s seatbelt. Once your child has passed the weight limit of the vehicle’s latch anchors, or if your vehicle doesn’t have latch anchors, you need to use the seatbelt installation.

Unfortunately, the seatbelt installation is a bit tricky. On both car seats, the latch plates tend to get in the way of the seatbelt path and make the installation loose. In order to get a tight installation, you need to fold the latch plates away from the seatbelt path.

Harness System
Both Diono Radian 3R and Diono Radian RXT are equipped with five-point harness straps that are solid and secure. Their straps are padded to enhance the comfort and prevent skin irritation. On either models, you can change the strap positions in order to provide the best fit for your growing child.

However, you need to deal with some manual rethreading in order to change the harness height. This is a bit inconvenient, as the process requires some time and effort. On the good side, the rethreading won’t take more than just a few minutes.

A notable difference between Diono Radian 3R and Diono Radian RXT is the headrest. Diono Radian 3R does not have an adjustable headrest. On the other hand, Diono Radian RXT is equipped with an adjustable headrest with 12 selectable positions to enhance the fit and comfort.

Other Features
Diono Radian 3R does not come with a cup holder. If you need one, you need to purchase it separately. On the other hand, Diono Radian RXT comes with an optional cup holder which you can put on the left or right side of the car seat.

Both Diono Radian 3R and Diono Radian RXT have removable fabrics. You can wash their fabrics in a washing machine with a delicate cycle and cold water. So, cleaning should be an easy task. Meanwhile, their frames, straps, and buckles can be spot-cleaned easily with a damp cloth and a mild soap.

Each model here is backed by a 1-year limited warranty, which will cover any defect in the materials or workmanship. They also have similar expiration limits. The harness mode has an expiration of 8 years after the manufacturing date, whereas the booster mode has an expiration of 10 years after the manufacturing date.
